Talk to your parents. Talk to your relatives. Record them. How I wish I had a recording of my Mother’s voice.
Ask them about their memories, their childhood, favourite films, books and games. One day you’ll wish you had.
Ask for help. Yes, I know I’m the worst for this. Stupid pride. You hate me? ‘Shrugs.’ You feel sorry for me? ‘Dissolves into a puddle of fury and self-hatred.’ Nevertheless, push past it. People love you. They want to help. Please, give them a chance.
Don’t give people advice, even if they ask. Give them practical help. Failing that, give them a chocolate bar and a hug. When you see a person who needs help,stop what you are doing and help them.
Always have a book in your bag.
Get a pet from a rescue, and love it so much it only remembers being loved.
Find the humour in every situation.
Don’t buy low fat or ‘diet’ anything. Especially mayonnaise.
Let go of vanity. The first thing I saw were my wrinkles and double chins, but my granddaughters beautiful face eclipses that. I hope she is always as loved and happy as she is at this moment.
Be defiant in the face of adversity.
Always pay [sincere] compliments. If you love someone’s dress/necklace/perfume tell them so.
Listen to music. Especially Motown.
Don’t be a knobhead.
Above all, take no notice of people who write lists telling you what to do.
